Frequently Asked Questions
about Hypnotherapy & Counselling
Why do I behave and feel the way I do?
Why do I have these symptoms?
As we grow up we are moulded by experiences and life events. We adapt to life's circumstances and learn behaviours and 'ways of being' that become part of who we are and what we do. Every behaviour, symptom and feeling has a purpose and a reason for being there, it is the way that your unique mind has learnt to cope, or learnt to protect you from the challenges of life.
Difficulties can arise when these 'ways of being', 'ways of doing things' or 'ways of feeling' are no longer needed, and instead, prevent us from making change, from achieving what we want to achieve, or from being who we want to be.
Sometimes, we may have an idea as to why we do what we do, feel as we do, or react as we do in certain situations. Often though, it seems as though things just happen to us: we just do things, or are compelled to do things, with us having little or no conscious control over them. Hypnotherapy and counselling can help you to make the changes you desire.
How does Hypnotherapy work?
Hypnosis opens the gates between conscious thought and the subconscious part of the mind (the instinctual part packed full of learned behaviours and experiences). Through therapy, the behaviours, symptoms or feelins that are creating problems for you, can be identified and changed. If necessary, the root cause of unwanted behaviours may be discovered and released, enabling change to take place and freeing you from whatever behaviours, feelings or symptoms are holding you back from being your true self and achieving what you want to achieve.
Why does willpower alone not always work?
In some cases, 'willpower' can be effective, but usually only temporarily, as to use willpower you are frequently, consciously, thinking about what it is that you 'do not' want to do; meaning that the thought of what you 'do not want to do' is at the forefront of your mind pretty much all of the time. This constant reminder of what it is that you are trying to move away from, triggers your desire to engage in the undesirable behaviour.
Do I need Hypnotherapy or Counselling?
Everybody is unique, so when you come to see me, we will discuss what it is that YOU need; how your issues/symptoms/behaviours/feelings/habits/addictions (or whatever your needs are) are affecting you and your life, and what it is that you want to enhance/change or achieve. We will also discuss the best way forward for treatment; some people and some issues are better suited to counselling and some better suited to hypnotherapy or analysis. In most circumstances, I will use a combination of hypnotherapy and counselling techniques and skills, as this enables me to provide you with the best treatment possible.
If, after an initial discussion, it is agreed between us that I can provide what you need and you make the decision to go ahead with the therapy, I will then prepare a bespoke therapy plan just for you, tailored specifically for you and your needs.
How many sessions will I need?
This depends entirely upon what you come to see me for and upon your level of commitment to the therapy. Many clients can achieve results in 1-3 sessions. Other clients may need longer due to the nature of their needs. To find out more please contact me
I feel, embarrassed / ashamed / awkward / uncertain / worried / anxious.
Many clients feel this way when entering therapy. sometimes their feelings can be about the therapy itself (the whole process will be explained and you can ask as many questions as you need to) and sometimes, it is because they have something from their past or present that they feel ashamed of, embarrassed about, or perhaps fear they may be judged on. Sometimes people avoid therapy due to a fear that something will 'slip out' (even if they do not know what that something is).
My aim, with every single client, is to create a nurturing, non-judgemental environment that feels safe for you to work within. I will listen attentively, with sensitivity and compassion, and you will, at all times, be in control of what you share and do not share, even when you are in hypnosis. It is, however, of utmost importance, for therapy to be successful, for you to be as open as you can possibly be and share what is on your mind, even if it feels difficult to do so.
I struggle to leave the house / I do not have transport.
I can come to you (within a reasonable distance). You will need to have an area where we can sit, free from distractions, and where I can access a plug socket. Time and distance charges may apply for distances greater than 6 miles from the Phoenix therapy room SEE HERE.
I can't see what I am looking for / My issue, problem, symptom or need is not on your site.
Just contact me for a chat or email me, this site only show a selection of the issues I work with. If you are looking for one to one, group work or a group experience that is not on my site I may be able to help. If I can't help you, I may be able to point you in the direction of someone who can.
What is BWRT?
BrainWorking Recursive Therapy® was created in 2011 by Terence Watts, a therapist, BWRT® author of many books and training courses and principal of the Essex Institute in Essex, UK.
BWRT makes it possible, via a simple technique, to create a new response pattern in the brain, so that the response the brain triggers is one that we want, (such as feeling calm in crowds) rather than the response we do not want (feeling anxious in crowds). The therapy can be quick and content-free too, so you don’t have to tell me about deeply sensitive or intimate issues.
